APPLICATION TIPS

Ten Top Tips for making your application stand out - within our application process

ONLINE APPLICATION

1. STAY FOCUSED

Your CV and cover letter are your first chance to impress and showcase your strengths and achievements. This means it is important to make sure the most relevant experience and achievements are made as obvious as possible.

It is very easy to quickly upload a previous version of your CV, but the best applications will include an up-to-date CV and tailored cover letter, formatted clearly and free from spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

Ensure each application you make is tailored. Do not send the same blanket CV and cover letter to every company. It is usually obvious and may result in you not progressing to the next stage.

2.  ATTENTION TO DETAIL

We recommend stepping away for ten minutes before submitting your final application and then sense checking one final time before sending through to the team.

When showcasing your strengths align your skills and experience to the specific expectations of the job description to really demonstrate that you understand the requirements of the role and why this is the job for you.

3. SHOWCASE YOUR PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE

It is always a plus to have obtained some previous work experience that you can lean on within your application. Even just one week at another company will show you have initiative.

Gardiner & Theobald have a work experience programme which might be of interest to you when looking for this initial experience.

4. APPLY EARLY

The earlier you submit your application the better.

While our recruitment cycle runs up until the end of March, once our positions have been filled we will be unable to make any more offers and this could result in the application window being closed early if we have already met with enough strong candidates.

PREPARING FOR A TELEPHONE INTERVIEW

5. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Congratulations! You have been invited to have a telephone interview with a member of our People & Development team. Success at this stage will determine whether you will be invited one of our Assessment Days.

Research G&T but do not simply repeat what you read word-for-word. We know what’s on our website, we want to know how you interpret it and what other research you have undertaken.

6. SHOWCASE YOUR PASSION

Check out our projects and any other news articles you can find that excite you, and that you can talk about.

Make sure you can speak about why this career path is right for you. Where you see yourself in 3-5 years’ time?

PREPARING FOR THE ASSESSMENT CENTRE

7. SHOW US WHO YOU ARE

The Assessment Centre is your chance to show us who you are at work. We are looking for interpersonal skills such as team-working, communication, and listening, alongside your technical aptitude.

8. BE PROFESSIONAL

Brush up again on any role specific technical knowledge you have.

Ensure you have planned the journey so you can arrive in plenty of time and bring  everything you need with you.

Dress professionally, be courteous towards your peers and try to enjoy the day as much as possible.

PREPARING FOR YOUR FINAL INTERVIEW

9. BE CONFIDENT

You performed well at our Assessment Centre and impressed us, so you have been invited back to interview with one of our partners. If you made it this far then don’t doubt your ability, we believe in you and want to see you do well, but you need to practise and prepare:
  • Interviews can be nerve wracking but be confident in your abilities - showcase your talents and be yourself.
  • Be prepared to talk about why you want to work at G&T and what attracts you to a career in the built environment.
  • Remember, the interview is a two-way process and an opportunity for you to confirm that G&T is where you want to start your career. Come with some questions that will help you make your decision.

10. OVERPREPARE
  • Reread your CV and covering letter.
  • Listen carefully to the questions being asked.
  • Be prepared to answer competency-based questions and ensure your answer is succinct and clear.
  • Think about which of your skills and experiences would be assets in the role and why.
  • Prepare questions to ask at the end of your interview.
